Improving Diagnosis Through the Use of Digital Radiography Improving Diagnosis Through the Use of Digital Radiography

Summary:

As aesthetic dentistry has gained in popularity among consumers, who are more aware of the potential it has to correct deficiencies in their smiles, practitioners are challenged to improve the nature of their treatment. Often, this entails providing treatment with a smaller associated expense, reduced treatment duration or expense, and with increased comfort to the patient throughout the procedure. Facing these imperatives, greater numbers of practitioners have opted to incorporate digital communications among the members of the interdisciplinary treatment team. Digital photographs are essential for the general practitioner, particularly with regard to their ability to rapidly and effectively document the patient's condition. In the diagnostic phase, the use of digital radiography presents considerable benefits to the practice as well. When the office staff is properly trained on the capture and handling of digital radiographs, the clinician has a powerful resource to aid in the diagnosis and treatment planning of a given patient.

Using Cross-Sectional Tomography to Perform Exploratory Radiography

Using Cross-Sectional Tomography to Perform Exploratory Radiography
Since osseointegration was first introduced by Branemark, dental implants have been used increasingly to replace missing teeth. The high predictability of implant success has been well documented. Unfortunately, there are numerous failures in implant dentistry. The primary failure on endosseous dental implants include improper diagnosis, treatment planning, and/or sequenceing; poor periodontal tissue management and/or maintenance; improper implant position at surgery; and aesthetic requirements…

Interdisciplinary Dentistry: Distilling Complex Patient Management Down to Fundamental Steps
The interaction between different specialties is a common treatment modality in patients with severely mutilated dentitions as well as in those with more limited clinical conditions but with high esthetic demands. In theory, every oral rehabilitation should be better approached by a multidisciplinary treatment.

Computer-Guided Applications Beyond Implants: Bone Grafting and Reconstructive Surgery
Technology has facilitated the diagnosis and treatment planning process allowing clinicians to become true architects and engineers of the oral cavity. Replacing missing teeth with an implant supported restoration represents both a surgical and restorative challenge due to bony defects / concavities, soft tissue concerns, emergence profile, and insufficient bone volume or bone density to stabilize an implant. The evolution of three-dimensional imaging modalities (CBCT) produces an unprecedented visualization of patient’s individual anatomy, which empowers the clinician with new state-of-the-art tools to diagnose and treatment plan with greater accuracy to manage the surgical site, increase precision, reduce patient morbidity, and avoid potential complications.
