Summary:

Tooth whitening of vital teeth continues to have a major impact on the practice of dentistry. The growing public interest in having whiter, brighter teeth is clearly evident in the advertisements from toothpaste manufacturers on "whitening" formulations of their products and by the number of individuals seeking whitening procedures from their dentists. In addition, new over-the-counter whitening products continue to emerge in a marketplace that cannot seem to get teeth white enough, bright enough, fast enough.

What new products and procedures have evolved over the past decade to whiten teeth? Are they better, safer, faster, and more effective now? Are dentists meeting public demand for whiter teeth and is this quest having a positive or negative impact on the practice of dentistry or the patient's dental health? I posed these questions to a group of experts on whitening procedures to get their opinions and recommendations.

Efficacy and Persistence of Tooth Bleaching Using a Diode Laser with Three Different Treatment Regimens
Bleaching is the most conservative esthetic treatment for discolored teeth when compared to resin-bonded composites, porcelain veneers, or crowns. The purpose of this study was to compare the efficacy of power bleaching using a laser assisted hydrogen peroxide system, and to determine the stability of the color change over a 6-month period.

Re-establishing Esthetics of Fluorosis-Stained Teeth Using Enamel Microabrasion and Dental Bleaching Techniques

Re-establishing Esthetics of Fluorosis-Stained Teeth Using Enamel Microabrasion and Dental Bleaching Techniques
The aim of this study was to report the clinical case of a female patient of 18 years with moderate fluorosis, whose smile was re-established by the use of an enamel microabrasion technique, followed by in-office bleaching. A microabrasion technique with 6% hydrochloric acid associated with silica carbide showed to be a safe and efficient method for removing white fluoroses stains, while dental bleaching was useful for obtaining a uniform tooth shade. The association of these techniques presented excellent results and the patient was satisfied. Both techniques are painless, fast and easy to perform, in addition to preserving the dental structure. Treatment showed immediate and permanent results; this technique must be divulged among professionals and their patients.

Orthodontic Caries Control and Bleaching

Orthodontic Caries Control and Bleaching
Oral hygiene during orthodontic treatment can be facilitated by applying bleaching materials to elevate the pH of the mouth during the course of treatment. Fabrication of thermoplastic bleaching trays directly in the mouth over the braces without impressions affords a reasonable technique for the multiple trays required during the orthodontic changes.

Single Dark Teeth Bleaching, Externally and Internally
Single dark teeth have some new bleaching options and materials, and the treatment options vary whether vital or non-vital. Restorative indications for anterior endodontically-treated teeth have changed, prompting a new interest in bleaching, with new techniques needed for maximum esthetics. Esthetic evaluations, bonding insights, and special tray fabrication designs will be explained, as well as when combination techniques are best utilized.

At-Home Bleaching: A 25-Year Retrospective Premium Member Content

At-Home Bleaching: A 25-Year Retrospective
The concept of at-home bleaching self-administered by the patient and supervised by the dentist became widely known in the profession about 25 years. At the time, little was known about bleaching except that application of a peroxide-based gel to the teeth could substantially lighten them in 4-6 weeks. Since then, a large volume of laboratory and clinical research have greatly expanded and enhanced our understanding of the process. This presentation provides a brief summary of what we have learned over the last 25 years, including how bleaching works and how long it lasts, safety issues, side effects such as tooth sensitivity, effects on teeth and materials, extended uses for bleaching, and over-the-counter options.
