I just got into a rather spirited discussion with one of my assistants about treating a "dry socket". A patient post extraction of #19, 4 days ago, came into office with pain and an apparent "dry socket". My assistant irrigated the socket with peridex. I questioned her and she told me her former employer (oral surgeon) used peridex on all dry sockets. This to me seems like a poor choice because of it being alcohol based. What then, is the correct treatment?

Wouldn't use peridex unless there was evidence of discharge or localized infection. Best to curette site under local and initiate new bleeding of socket walls to initiate new clot. Prefer to irrigate with saline and then utilize a medicated packing with analgesic material for comfort.
