Esthetic Rehabilitation of the Periodontally Compromised Dentition Premium Member Content

Esthetic Rehabilitation of the Periodontally Compromised Dentition
Rehabilitation of esthetics in advanced periodontal cases presents a major challenge in dentistry today. Patients with advanced disease affecting teeth in the esthetic zone, where significant asymmetrical bone loss and tissue recession are present, constitute a challenging treatment-planning dilemma when choosing the optimum therapeutic option for long-term maintenance. This article reviews a novel interdisciplinary approach for vertical augmentation of bone and soft tissues by means of orthodontic extrusion of severely periodontally compromised teeth, facilitating the restoration of esthetics with improved bone and soft tissue volume around immediate implants.

Orthodontic Management of Spaces in Adult Patients Missing a Maxillary Tooth Premium Member Content

Orthodontic Management of Spaces in Adult Patients Missing a Maxillary Tooth
Treating an adult patient is quite common nowadays. Planning orthodontic treatment for these patients goes beyond esthetics and achieving a Class I occlusion. An adult malocclusion, in contrast to an adolescent one, may have suffered abrasion, periodontal deterioration, loss of teeth, etc. All these events may impede an excellent orthodontic result. The ideal dimensions of anterior teeth might not apply in all adult cases due to the above-mentioned factors. The presentation reviews the actual space requirements and how these are managed in adult malocclusions and restored to make them ideal for each individual case where an anterior tooth is absent.

Orthodontics Has Changed…What Does That Really Mean to the Dental Team? Premium Member Content

Orthodontics Has Changed…What Does That Really Mean to the Dental Team?
Our orthodontic experiences in dental school were most often characterized by mystery and “No Admittance”. Wrapped in the inscrutability of cephalometric analyses and its complexities, orthodontics was intimidating and forbidding. But times have changed! What is different? Orthodontic diagnosis has evolved to look at the patient for the same characteristics that you do, only more! The objective of this presentation is to demonstrate the similarities and such things as smile design, but to take you to another level of facial, smile, and dental esthetic planning that elevates what you are able to offer your patients to a most rewarding plateau.

Sequencing of Periodontal Procedures and Orthodontic Treatment Premium Member Content

Sequencing of Periodontal Procedures and Orthodontic Treatment
Severe cases of periodontal disease often require periodontal surgery and realignment of teeth. Surgical techniques have been developed that attempt to minimize postsurgical gingival recession and compromise the interdental papillae. A case report is presented in which reversal and correction of a deteriorating maxillary frontal dentition were effectively achieved through combined use of periodontal and orthodontic principles. The treatment plan included the control of periodontal inflammation, restoration of lost attachment apparatus, realignment of anterior dentition, stabilization of occlusion, and minor periodontal plastic surgery. The anticipated loss of a maxillary lateral incisor was avoided. Restoration of a pleasant smile with nicely aligned teeth and esthetic gingival contours was achieved. The correct sequencing of the procedures involved was considered a key factor for the long-term esthetic outcome.

Working With Spaces and Decisions on the Congenitally Missing Lateral Incisor - Part 1 of 2 Premium Member Content

Working With Spaces and Decisions on the Congenitally Missing Lateral Incisor - Part 1 of 2
A congenitally missing maxillary lateral incisor is quite common today on a Orthodontic practice. Through the years, the alternatives of restoring the missing lateral incisor have increased in such a level that today we can offer a patient the option of opening the space for a tooth supported restoration, or for an implant supported restoration. We could also offer closing the space and have a tooth substitution type of solution to this problem. The lecture will go in detail on the aspects we should consider while making the decision on what treatment option to follow.
