Controlling Systematic Perioperative Anaerobic Contamination During Sinus-Lift Procedures by Using Metronidazole: An Innovative Approach

Controlling Systematic Perioperative Anaerobic Contamination During Sinus-Lift Procedures by Using Metronidazole: An Innovative Approach
Analysis of tomodensitometric controls following sinus grafts clearly demonstrates a quite systematic lack of homogeneity. Sinus contamination by anaerobic bacteria seems almost unavoidable during bone graft surgery, and this problem may jeopardize the healing process. The aim of this study was to characterize in a systematic way the nonhomogeneities observed at 1,2,or 3 months post surgery within allogenous sinus grafts, and to assess the possible influence of a 0.5% sterile solution of metronidazole in corporated in the sinus bonegraft.

Sinus Augmentation for Single-Tooth Replacement in the Posterior Maxilla: A 3-Year Follow-up Clinical Report

Sinus Augmentation for Single-Tooth Replacement in the Posterior Maxilla: A 3-Year Follow-up Clinical Report
A technique for single-tooth sinus lift and simultaneous implant placement in the posterior maxilla is presented. Ten hydroxyapatite-coated cylindric implants, 13 to 15 mm in length, were placed together with a composite bone graft of demineralized freeze-dried bone allograft and autogenous bone in 10 adults. Surgical technique and anatomic considerations are discussed. Follow-up of 3 years showed successful function and no cervical bone loss in all patients.

Radiological Findings of the Post-Sinus Lift Maxillary Sinus: A Computerized Tomography Follow-Up

Radiological Findings of the Post-Sinus Lift Maxillary Sinus: A Computerized Tomography Follow-Up
The purpose of this article is to present radiological findings of a short-term (8 to 10 months) computerized tomography (CT) follow-up study on 1-stage maxillary sinus lift cases.

Sinus Floor Augmentation With Simultaneous Implant Placement Using Choukroun’s Platelet-Rich Fibrin as the Sole Grafting Material: A Radiologic and Histologic Study at 6 Months

Sinus Floor Augmentation With Simultaneous Implant Placement Using Choukroun’s Platelet-Rich Fibrin as the Sole Grafting Material: A Radiologic and Histologic Study at 6 Months
Sinus augmentation with simultaneous implant placement without bone graft material is a hotly debated technique. This technique could be improved and secured by the use of an autologous leukocyte-and platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) (Choukroun’s technique) concentrate. The objectives of this study were to assess the relevance of PRF clots and membranes as the sole filling material during a lateral sinus lift with immediate implantation using radiologic and histologic analyses in a case series.

Healing in Smokers Versus Nonsmokers: Survival Rates for Sinus Floor Augmentation with Simultaneous Implant Placement

Healing in Smokers Versus Nonsmokers: Survival Rates for Sinus Floor Augmentation with Simultaneous Implant Placement
Evidence suggests that smoking is detrimental to the survival of dental implants placed in grafted maxillary sinuses. Studies have shown that improving bone quantity and quality, using rough- surfaced implants, and practicing good oral hygiene may improve outcomes. In this prospective study, the long-term survival rates of implants placed simultaneously with sinus grafting in smokers and non- smokers were compared.

The Effect of Piezoelectric Use on Open Sinus Lift Perforation: A Retrospective Evaluation of 56 Consecutively Treated Cases From Private Practices

The Effect of Piezoelectric Use on Open Sinus Lift Perforation: A Retrospective Evaluation of 56 Consecutively Treated Cases From Private Practices
The lateral window approach to maxillary sinus augmentation is a well-accepted treatment option in implant dentistry. The most frequent complication reported with traditional techniques has been the perforation of the Schneiderian membrane, with erforation rates ranging from 11% to 56%. The purpose of this retrospective, consecutive case series from two private practices was to report on the rate of Schneiderian membrane perforations and arterial lacerations when a piezoelectric surgical unit was used in conjunction with hand instrumentation to perform lateral window sinus elevations.

Human Histologic Evaluation of Anorganic Bovine Bone Mineral Combined with Recombinant Human Platelet-Derived Growth Factor BB in Maxillary Sinus Augmentation: Case Series Study

Human Histologic Evaluation of Anorganic Bovine Bone Mineral Combined with Recombinant Human Platelet-Derived Growth Factor BB in Maxillary Sinus Augmentation: Case Series Study
The objective of this study was to examine the potential for improved bone regenerative outcomes in maxillary sinus augmentation procedures using platelet-derived growth factor BB and anorganic bovine bone mineral.

Bone-to-Implant Apposition with Machined and MTX Microtextured Implant Surfaces in Human Sinus Grafts

Bone-to-Implant Apposition with Machined and MTX Microtextured Implant Surfaces in Human Sinus Grafts
The goal of this study was to histologically document the effect of two different implant surfaces on the percentage of bone-to-implant apposition achieved with implants placed in human sinus grafts.

Maxillary Sinus Membrane Repair: Update on Technique for Large and Complete Perforations

Maxillary Sinus Membrane Repair: Update on Technique for Large and Complete Perforations
Maxillary sinus membrane perforation is the most common complication that occurs with sinus elevation augmentation surgery. A technique using a slow resorbing type I collagen membrane for repair of large and complete sinus membrane perforations is described. The biocompatibility and semirigid structural integrity of this membrane, along with external tack fixation, allows for optimal membrane stabilization and maintenance. (Implant Dent 2008;17:24–31)
