How many on this board utilize Zirconiu Implants in their practice and which system do you suggest? Thanks Band

Maurice Salama - (10/15/2009 4:53 AM)

Delfin and Milo;
The research on Zirconium implants is positive for osseointegration similar to titanium implants. The Z system is an FDA approved Zircoium Implant system in the USA but there are many others that have been approved and being sold in Europe. It is an excellent option for those of us practicing metal-free dentistry like yourself.
Milo, you have to prep the Zirconium implant at times and to place the margins subgingivally. We utilize Brassler diamond burs for slight reductions and margin finishing and chromium cobalt for gross reduction if needed. All this must be performed under copious irrigation.
Thanks for the posts
Dr. Salama

Hello everyone, Im from Costa Rica. I struggle to practice a metal free dentistry. A lot of patients that are interested in neurofocal dentistry prefer having no teeth than using titanium implants. Im interested in zirconium implants but Im not sure about the research behind them.

What bur are you using to prep over the zirconium, carbide or diamond?

Any XP members using Zirconium implants in their clinical practices? I have done a few of the Z-Systems and have had good results so far. Dr. Salama

Prosthetic Strategies to Enhance Dental Implant Aesthetics Premium Member Content

Prosthetic Strategies to Enhance Dental Implant Aesthetics
The principle focus of implant dentistry has changed significantly from the era of ‘Anatomically driven implant placement’ to the current practice of ‘Restoration driven implant placement’. When we now look at the failing dentition in the aesthetic zone we now must immediately consider conversion to implants. We are continually seeking greater control of the peri-implant tissues and ultimately the aesthetics of the restoration. Implant/abutment designs allow us to consider immediate implant replacement, and immediate non-functional loading especially in the aesthetic zone, where preservation of hard and soft tissue is of paramount importance in order follow the principles of aesthetics by maintaining the elements which are already there

Placing Dental Implants and/or Natural Tooth Restorations in the Esthetic Zone
A key goal of aesthetic/cosmetic dentistry is the fabrication of maintainable, aesthetic, and functional prostheses that preserve the health of the teeth and soft tissues. Advances in restorative dentistry have significantly improved the clinician’s ability to deliver predictable treatment. When implants are indicated, osseointegration is an added factor that is essential for success. It is universally accepted that implant dentistry is a restorative-driven treatment with a surgical component. Whether…

Does residual cement around implant-supported restorations cause peri-implant disease? A retrospective case analysis
The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between patients with a history of periodontitis and development of cement-related peri-implant disease. Seventy-seven patients with 129 implants for this retrospective analysis were selected from completed implant cases that were scheduled for regular maintenance or had experienced mechanical or biological complications between years 2006 and 2011 in private practice. Implants with extracoronal residual cement and implants without cement remnants were analyzed.
