The treatment of periodontal patients has evolved over the years. Once considered a predominantly resective profession, we have developed over the past 30 years to evolve into a regenerative specialty. Today, our profession aims at targeting treatments based upon specific patient attributes which include DNA and genetic testing as well as bacterial identification and antibiotic therapies. This direction has allowed us to become a "highly" specialized profession aimed at stability, maintenance and evaluation of each individual patient beyond classic visual clinical parameters. This lecture will highlight the specific role of Salivary Diagnostics in a Clinical practice which includes an evaluation of PPT (periodontal pathogens), PST (genetic periodontal susceptibility) as well as the presence of HPV (human pappiloma virus) and how to best incorporate it into your clinical practice.

CBCT in Endodontics: Changing the Landscape of Diagnosis and Clinical Treatment
Radiographic imaging is essential in the diagnosis, treatment planning and follow-up in endodontics. The interpretation of an image can be confounded by a number of factors, including the regional anatomy as well as superimposition of both the teeth and surrounding dento-alveolar structures. As a result of superimposition, periapical radiographs reveal only limited aspects, a 2-dimensional view, of the true three dimensional anatomy. Additionally, there is often geometric distortion of the anatomical structures being imaged with conventional radiographic methods. These problems can be overcome by utilizing small or limited volume cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) imaging techniques which produce accurate 3-dimensional images of the teeth and surrounding dento-alveolar structures. This presentation will highlight the indications, advantages and considerations of the use of CBCT in endodontics.

As dental implants become a routine part of dental practice, so too will the prevalence of peri-implant diseases. Inherent to the treatment of peri-implant disease is the removal of microbial biofilms from the implant surface. Currently, there is no standardized protocol for application of any treatment modality directed at implant surface decontamination. In this in vitro study, we report on the effectiveness of a super-pulsed CO2 laser, delivering an average fluence of 6.3 to 113 J/cm2, to remove biofilm from three different types of implant surface topographies. Biofilms ranged in thickness from 5 to 15 μm. An average fluence of 19 J/cm2 was sufficient to achieve 100% ablation of the biofilm on hydrophilic sandblasted and acidetched surface specimens (SA). However, to achieve 100% ablation of biofilm on HA and highly crystalline, phosphate enriched titanium oxide (PTO) surfaced implants required an average fluence of 38 J/cm2.
