Principles of Clinically Successful Shade Taking - The Science & Art - Part 7

Description:
In this 7th of a series of clinical video demonstrations of techniques discussed in previous didactic lectures (Part 1 & 2), Dr. Ed McLaren, director of the UCLA Center for Esthetic Dentistry, continues the very clinically applicable demonstration of advanced and step-by-step shade taking techniques on a patient requiring a single anterior crown. Specifically, this part moves the process to the laboratory.

Clinical Excellence in Operative Dentistry: Not Only A Question of Color & Fancy Trends
Nowadays the maintenance of “a nice smiling” represents the main desire of our patients and the request for tooth colored restorations is very high. Predictable and repeatable results can be achieved through materials and clinical practices that, on one hand, preserve the original structure of the compromised tooth and, on the other hand, involve a very low biologic price. New technologies for the enamel-dentinal adhesion and the continuous evolution of more sophisticated esthetic materials as composite and porcelains allow the effective reaching of verifiable and predictable results. This lecture aims to point out the relevant guidelines in both direct and indirect techniques for esthetic restorations through the evaluation of techniques and materials in order to reach correct, standardized and long lasting evidence based clinical results.

Correction of Tooth Defects and Discolored Teeth Using Direct Composite Resin Premium Member Content

Correction of Tooth Defects and Discolored Teeth Using Direct Composite Resin
For over 50 years dentists have been making instant esthetic transformations using direct composite resin. That technology has been enhanced by the latest nano composite materials. Although the past decade has seen greater use of ceramic materials in esthetic dentistry, direct bonding with these new composites is still a highly valuable procedure. This video will deal with correction of severe tooth discoloration using nano composites. Immediate composite resin bonding can act as either the ideal correction or as an extended trial smile so patients can live with their new smile as long as necessary.

Planning & Finishing Techniques

Planning & Finishing Techniques
Longevity and optimal aesthetics are critical aspects to consider when planning for direct composite resin restorations. While strength, wear resistance, and superior micromechanical retention are typically associated with functional durability, during the planning stage clinicians must equally consider aesthetic longevity, which includes retension of the original morphology, color stability, stain resistance, and marginal adaptation. To ensure optimum results for direct composite resin restorations,…

Fatigue Resistance and Crack Propensity of Novel "Super-Closed" Sandwich Composite Resin Restorations in Large MOD Defects

Fatigue Resistance and Crack Propensity of Novel "Super-Closed" Sandwich Composite Resin Restorations in Large MOD Defects
To asses the influence of conventional glass ionomer cement (GIC) vs resin-modified GIC (RMGIC) as a base material for novel, super-closed sandwich restorations (SCSR) and its effect on shrinkage-induced crack propensity and in vitro accelerated fatigue resistance. A standard MOD slot-type tooth preparation was applied to 30 extracted maxillary molars. A modified sandwich restoration was used, in which the enamel/dentin bonding agent was applied first, followed by a Ketac Molar or Fuji II LC base, leaving 2mm for composite resin material. Shrinkage induced enamel cracks were tracked with photography and transillumination. Samples were loaded until fracture or to a maximum of 185,000 cycles under isometric chewing, starting with a load of 200 N and gradually up to a maximum of 30,000 each...
