Dr. Akin, an Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon in private practice in Baton Rouge, LA, earned both his Doctor of Dental Surgery (1998) and Doctor of Medicine (2001) from the Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center in New Orleans. He completed his surgical residency program in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery in New Orleans. He became a Diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in 2006.
Graduating among the top of his class at LSU School of Dentistry, he was the recipient of numerous honors, including the Dean’s Award, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Award, Pharmacology Award and Student Researcher of the Year award. He represented LSU while presenting his pre-doctoral research in maxillofacial distraction osteogenesis at international and national conferences. This research was conducted under a National Institute of Health "T35 Grant."
He is Board Certified in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and a member of the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, International Team of Implantologists, American Academy of Implant Dentistry, Academy of Osseointegration, International Congress of Oral Implantologists, Seattle Study Club, American Dental Association, American Medical Association, American Dental Society of Anesthesiology and the Louisiana Dental Association.
He earned his Bachelor of Science at Providence College (RI) and is a second generation Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon. Born in New Orleans, he practiced with his father before moving to Baton Rouge in 2005.
Dr. Akin lectures locally on the techniques and benefits of immediate placement and provisionalization of dental implants and has specific interests in minimally invasive implant surgery. Other interests include patient education software development and procedure technique videos.
