Video Overview
The interaction between different specialties is a common treatment modality in patients with severely mutilated dentitions as well as in those with more limited clinical conditions but with high esthetic demands. In theory, every oral rehabilitation should be better approached by a multidisciplinary treatment. Unfortunately, quite often treatment management involving different specialties may be frustrating and the interaction between them may lead to additional problems instead of additional solutions: “fuzzy” exposure to even the highest state of the art treatment in each discipline may result in enormous waste of time and money with far from ideal results. Optimal multidisciplinary or interdisciplinary management should maximize treatment results by synergizing the knowledge, skills and possibilities of all the different dental disciplines at the same time minimizing frustrations and shortcomings that may occur in treatment management. A good knowledge of fundamentals of interdisciplinary treatment and of possible interactions between various disciplines should be mandatory to the dentist to incorporate a comprehensive treatment approach into everyday treatment and to be able to develop an interdisciplinary treatment plan.
