Course:
Sedation Fellowship - IV Sedation Pharmacology

Course Overview
When it comes to the safety and efficacy of sedation, three of the most important subjects arguably include pharmacology, patient selection, and airway management. All three are tied intimately to patient safety, and pharmacology also has a great deal to do with sedation effectiveness.
Understanding the mechanisms of how drugs act, and how the body responds to their action are key to their safe and effective use.
We plunge into this topic to share with you pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of a wide range of sedative agents. You learn why and how they work; why some are better than others; and the methods used to reverse the effects of each.
Course Objectives
1. Understand the pharmacokinetics of common IV drugs, including potency, efficacy, and plasma-protein binding
2. Recognize the role and phases of metabolism, induction, and inhibition of CYP3A4
3. Identify polymorphism, gross anatomy, and excretion
4. Learn the pharmacodynamics that effects sedation
5. Recognize agonists and antagonists
6. Understand the role of the GABA receptor
7. Discover benzodiazepines and their mechanism of cation, abuse, and tolerance, withdrawal, and risk factors.
8. Identify various benzodiazepines and key points about each
9. Recognize the critical reversal agent and protocols for use
10. Discuss the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of opioids including side effects and agonist agents
11. Learn about the less-commonly-used sedatives and their effects on organ systems
12. Discover the pharmacology behind nitrous oxide
