Dr. Sarver received his DMD from The University of Alabama School of Dentistry and M.S. in Orthodontics from the University of North Carolina in 1979. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics, a member of the Edward H. Angle Society of Orthodontists, and a Fellow in both the International and American Colleges of Dentists.

In addition to his private practice, Dr. Sarver has authored or co authored over 60 scientific articles, 14 book chapters, and his book, "Esthetics in Orthodontics and Orthognathic Surgery" was published in September, 1998. He is also co-author (with Dr. Proffit and White) of the surgical text “Contemporary Treatment of Dentofacial Deformity), published by Elsevier, Inc. and is co-author the 4th edition of Proffit’s classic textbook “Contemporary Orthodontics”, the most widely used orthodontic text in the world. His 2 part article, coauthored with Dr. Marc Ackerman, on smile analysis won the 2004 B.F. Dewel Award for the best clinical article in the American Journal of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics. He has given more than 250 professional presentations in the United States, Europe, Australia and the Middle and Far East including both the Salzmann and Mershon Lectures at the AAO. Dr. Sarver has been featured on NBC’s “The Today Show”, ABC’s “The View”, and Fox National News.

David's wife, Valerie, worked 23 years as a Systems engineer with IBM. Their daughter Suzanne (21) is a student, daughter Leigh (25) is a graduate of Savannah College of Art and Design and works in Birmingham, and son Dave (29) is studying Medicine at the University of Alabama. In 2010, Dr. Sarver was named "Citizen of the Year" in Vestavia Hills.
