Dr. Perdigão received his DMD degree from the University of Lisbon, Portugal, in 1985. In 1992 he finished a Master's degree in Operative Dentistry from the University of Iowa, and in 1993 he received a Certificate degree in Operative Dentistry also from the University of Iowa. In 1995 Dr. Perdigão defended his PhD dissertation in Dental Materials at the Catholic University of Leuven, Belgium. He served as an Associate Professor of Operative Dentistry at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill from 1996 to 1999 and is currently Professor of Operative Dentistry at the University of Minnesota.
Dr. Perdigão is involved in research of new dental materials mainly in the area of dentin adhesion. His research has involved clinical trials of dentin adhesives, posterior composites, and dental whitening. He has delivered over 150 lectures worldwide and has published over 140 articles in international journals. He is also author of seven chapters on Dental Adhesion in several books, including the Sturdevant's Art and Science of Operative Dentistry (Mosby). He is editor and author of the book Restoration of Root Canal Treated Teeth: An Adhesive Dentistry Perspective (Springer).
Dr. Perdigão has received several international awards, including the 1993 Microscopy Society of America Presidential Award. He currently serves as Associate Editor in the Journal of Adhesive Dentistry and Section Editor of Operative Dentistry in the Journal of Esthetic and Restorative Dentistry. He is also member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Biomedical Materials Research Part B: Applied Biomaterials, the American Journal of Dentistry and the Italian Journal of Operative Dentistry. He has been a consultant for several manufacturers worldwide in the development of new adhesive dental materials and has served as a mentor to numerous international postdoctoral research fellows and graduate students. Dr. Perdigão has served as a consultant to the ADA Committee for Scientific Affairs since 1999 and to the FDA Dermatologic & Ophthalmic Advisory Committee since 2006.
Dr Perdigão is currently Professor in the Division of Operative Dentistry & Department of Restorative Sciences at University of Minnesota School of Dental Medicine.
