Dr. Mohamed Sharawy received his bachelor of Dental Surgery with Honor (B.D.S.) in 1962 followed by three years of oral surgery training from Cairo University, School of Dentistry, Cairo, Egypt. He received his diploma and science medallion from the President of Egypt for the highest achievement among graduating dentists in Egypt in 1963. Dr. Sharawy received a Fullbright Scholarship to study for his PhD in the USA. He then received his Ph.D. degree in Anatomical Sciences from the School of Medicine and Dentistry, University of Rochester, Rochester, N.Y. in 1970. Dr. Sharawy accepted a position at the Medical College of Georgia, Schools of Medicine and Dentistry in 1970. He is one of the initiators and developers of the MCG School of Dentistry in Augusta, Georgia. He is currently Professor and Director of Anatomy in the Department of Oral Biology and Maxillofacial Pathology and Professor of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the Medical College of Georgia, Augusta, Georgia. He is also Professor of Cell Biology & Anatomy at the MCG School of Medicine and Professor at the School of Graduate Studies. Dr. Sharawy served as a mentor and major advisor for over 30 national and international PhD students. The research projects often addressed questions related to bone and implants. Dr. Sharawy is co-editor and contributor to Orban's textbook of Oral Histology, Senior associate editor of the Journal of Oral Implantology, author of the Companion of Applied Anatomy and contributor to several symposia and books of oral implantology and TMJ.

Dr. Sharawy has authored over one hundred original research papers and over 200 abstracts. He is primarily interested in applied research related to bone regeneration, bioengineering using bone cells, polymers, local growth factors and implants. He has presented his findings at numerous national and international research and education meetings.

Dr. Sharawy is the President of the Anatomical Board for the State of Georgia. He was recently elected to the Board of Governors, American Academy of Implant Dentistry Research Foundation and the Chairman of the Research Committee. He is a member of many professional societies among which are: International Association of Dental Research, American Association of Anatomists, American Association of Implant Prosthodontics and American Dental Association.

Dr. Sharawy is the author of two volumes of the Companion of Applied Anatomy, co-editor and contributor to Orban’s Textbook in Oral Histology, contributor to Misch’s Contemporary Implant Dentistry, and several books of implantology and the TMJ.

Dr. Sharawy, through the AAID, was one of the initiators and developers of the MAXI course in the USA. The course provides over 300 hours of instructions that include 50 hours of surgical anatomy for implantologists. The Maxi course is in its 14th year at MCG. He is also a significant contributor to the Maxi Course at Howard University and at the University of Irbid, Jordan. Dr. Sharawy has participated in the Perceptorship Program in Implantology at San Antonio School of Dentistry for the past 13 years. He also presents an advanced course in bone graft and implants at the same institute. He is a visiting Professor at Misch International institute for Implants since its inception and the course director for the surgical anatomy course. Dr. Sharawy was the past interim dean and one of the initiators and developers of the School of Dentistry at King Abdul-Aziz University at Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

Dr. Sharawy serves as a consultant to the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Programs for the U.S. Army. He presented the surgical anatomy course at five forts for the past 27 years.

He presented the surgical anatomy course for 30 consecutive years at MCG and in numerous countries in Europe, Asia and the Middle East.

Dr. Sharawy has received numerous awards among which are:
