Dr. Thomas Sperling received his dental degree from the Universidad Nacional , Bogotá , Colombia in 1960 and specialized in Orthodontics in Buenos Aires , Argentina 1961-62 .

Between 1963 and 2000 he alternated private practice dedicated exclusively to Orthodontics and teaching at the Universidad Nacional , where in 1982 he established the graduate Ortho program and was its chairperson up to 1991.

Between 1985 and 1993 he also conducted the edgewise clinic at the Universidad Javeriana Orthodontic program in Bogotá, Colombia and from 1991 to 1993 he became its chairman.

From 1997 to 2000 on his way to retirement , and while commuting between Colombia and the United States , he became a part time instructor at Nova Southeastern University Orthodontic program in Fort Lauderdale , Florida .

In 2000 he retired from active practice in Colombia and relocated to South Florida where he was promoted to faculty adjunct. In the year 2002, after receiving the “educator of the year award” he left Nova and started a different teaching schedule.

Since 2004 he is the Clinical co-chairman of the Dade County Dental Research Orthodontic clinic and since 2006 he is a Courtesy Faculty for the University of Florida College of Dentistry at their Hialeah clinic.

Nowadays his teaching and consulting activities include both specialists and general dentists , and the mechanism varies according to different needs , ranging from personal supervision of patients under treatment, periodical meetings to discuss diagnosis , treatment planning and case progress , meeting with study groups , giving lectures and seminars , etc .

Although most of his activities take place locally in South Florida, Dr. Sperling being retired is able to visit the interested dentists at their locations and develop an online consulting service with the aid of digital photography.

Dr. Sperling is a past president of the Colombian Orthodontic Society, retired member of the American Association of Orthodontists, and since 1995 Senior Instructor of the International Association for Orthodontics, IAO.

He has been invited to lecture in the United States, Colombia, Venezuela, Argentina, Israel and India.
