This lecture will provide you with the background information on the rapidly changing digital dental technologies that allow you to make enlightened decision on what to use and how to gain the greatest benefit when incorporated into your practice. Recent advances such as three-dimensional dental radiography with cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT), virtual dental implant planning, clinical execution with guided surgery and new computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) technology for the implant abutment and restoration all play a role in the success of modern implant dentistry. While the benefits of CBCT scans for treatment planning and fabrication of surgical guides is well understood, this lecture will also illuminate and clarify the inherent potential problems found in some imaging data. The digital work flow for guided surgery and CAD/CAM offers new approaches to the way dentists can practice implant dentistry. CAD-CAM has already begun to revolutionize the world of medical and dental implants by allowing practitioners to offer custom-made solutions to suit individual patient needs. Combined with guided surgery it is now possible to transfer the virtual implant position to the real patient, which is opening up new restorative options, particularly for implant prosthetics. The benefits of this approach are reduced complications, more predictable results and increased confidence of the surgeon. Digital Restorative Technologies, Implants, Aesthetics and Occlusion
CAD/CAM technology has the advantage of reduced clinical chair-time and reduced laboratory costs. The accuracy of these techniques has improved to the point where they are now comparable to conventional techniques. This presentation will review the current technology which allows the fabrication of an implant abutments through streamlined digital fabrication, that maximizes aesthetics and minimizes time and errors. In addition, this impression does not require the removal of the healing abutment. The fabrication of ceramic full coverage restorations and veneers, with an in-office technique, will also be demonstrated. Occlusion principles will be discussed as they relate to new materials and their application in private practice.

CBCT(Cone Beam Computed Tomography) has developed in the last years from a highly specialized used subject used mainly by specialized surgeons and implantologists to a wide field of indications, used mostly by general practitioners, periodontists, endodontists, general implantologists and orthodontists. The picture quality has increased drastically so the 3-D X-ray techniques are able to show aspects that 2-D X-ray-techniques are unable to present. 3-D X-ray systems are linked today to other diagnostic and electro-mechanical systems as there are automaticised software measure and diagnostic tools, intra and extra-oral scanning systems and CAD-CAM-milling-systems. That increases the diagnostic and treatment possibilities this systems offers to the users.

Effectiveness of a Super-Pulsed CO2 Laser For Removal of Biofilm From Three Different Types of Implant Surfaces: An In Vitro Study
As dental implants become a routine part of dental practice, so too will the prevalence of peri-implant diseases. Inherent to the treatment of peri-implant disease is the removal of microbial biofilms from the implant surface. Currently, there is no standardized protocol for application of any treatment modality directed at implant surface decontamination. In this in vitro study, we report on the effectiveness of a super-pulsed CO2 laser, delivering an average fluence of 6.3 to 113 J/cm2, to remove biofilm from three different types of implant surface topographies. Biofilms ranged in thickness from 5 to 15 μm. An average fluence of 19 J/cm2 was sufficient to achieve 100% ablation of the biofilm on hydrophilic sandblasted and acidetched surface specimens (SA). However, to achieve 100% ablation of biofilm on HA and highly crystalline, phosphate enriched titanium oxide (PTO) surfaced implants required an average fluence of 38 J/cm2.
