This course addresses this gap in knowledge by summarizing some of the groundbreaking research performed to date on this topic and provides case examples of these biomaterials at work. The course begins with a review of the biologic background and applications of bone grafting materials utilized in dentistry. Thereafter, new and exciting updates on Platelet Rich Fibrin, Emdogain/Osteogain, Tetranite and Vitamin D deficiency are discussed with respect to their ability to promote either bone or periodontal regeneration.

@Daniel. Thank you for the kind words. Regarding alloplasts + b-TCP, we have done TONS of research on this topic as has the entire group in Bern. In general the synthetic bone grafts are not as effective as bone allografts as a replacement material - though there is much ongoign research in that field to try to develop something. Slowly that field is progressing but I would say still behind the commonly utilized allografts. The work on the new synthetically fabricated osteoinductive bone graft (Osopia) is not FDA approved yet. I would be cautious using Piezo to debride sockets because of the effects on bone cell viability. Surely it will still work, but there are more favorable alternatives that might not be as damaging to cells.

@Snjezana, actually I show the same grafting material table in my Biomaterials course and talk about the dentin grinder in our course on Biomaterials. These are the 'standard' tables but I agree dentin grafting should be included!

I use the piezo to debride sockets before grafting, is that killing good cells? I am a PRF doc, would that exudate return any damage I am doing?

Current Concepts for the Preservation of the Post-Extraction Alveolar Ridge
Different techniques have been presented in literature in order to preserve the post-extraction site; including the use of barrier membranes, tri-dimensional matrix and bone fillers. An “open-healing” approach is nowadays commonly used, combining a proper management of soft tissues with biological integration of biomaterials. Once hard tissue has been successfully augmented, an adequate soft tissue thickness becomes mandatory in order to create healthy and stable peri-implant tissues. An innovative volume-stable collagen matrix provides the opportunity to treat soft tissue defects around implants as an alternative to connective tissue graft.

Esthetic Zone Reconstruction: Synergy of Hard and Soft Tissue Grafting
The loss of alveolar ridge contour in the esthetic zone compromises both esthetics and function. This clinical presentation will focus on the application of both hard and soft tissue grafting in the esthetic zone implementing state of the art interactive CT diagnosis and treatment planning for optimal esthetic implant reconstruction. Emphasis will be on indications, graft and harvest site assessment, timing, and use of bioactive modifiers including BMP, PRGF and PDGF. The surgical protocol utilizing allogeneic and autogenous grafts in conjunction with connective tissue grafts, acellular dermis matrix, and related soft tissue procedures to avoid functional and esthetic pitfalls will be featured. Pre and post-grafting prosthetic workup, interactive CT graft assessment and perio prosthetic driven implant planning, stent driven implant placement, and computer milled abutment fabrication including guided surgery will be included.
