The Role of Orthodontics in the Multidisciplinary Treatment of Complex Cases - Part 2 of 2
Description:
Orthodontics sets up the foundation for future prosthetics in cases with periodontal, surgical and restorative dentistry requirements. Adult orthodontics simplifies complex clinical situations. Making it easier for restorative dentist to achieve better esthetic & functional results. Orthognatic surgery combined with orthodontics corrects skeletal discrepancies in order to have the patient ready for prosthodontic replacement of multiple missing teeth. Cases combined with implants to restore form & function will further illustrate the importance of multidisciplinary dentistry. Today´s practice requires a team approach that will be presented. In order to meet the patient´s demands for better esthetics and to obtain long term occlusal stability of our results. Cases will ilustrate how orthodontics combines with distraction osteogenesis & conventional orthognatic surgery in severe dentofacial deformities cases. Orthodontics combined with other dental specialties. Produce an end result that guarantees long term periodontal health and produces patient´s satisfaction with his or her dentofacial esthetics.

Sequencing of Periodontal Procedures and Orthodontic Treatment
Severe cases of periodontal disease often require periodontal surgery and realignment of teeth. Surgical techniques have been developed that attempt to minimize postsurgical gingival recession and compromise the interdental papillae. A case report is presented in which reversal and correction of a deteriorating maxillary frontal dentition were effectively achieved through combined use of periodontal and orthodontic principles. The treatment plan included the control of periodontal inflammation, restoration of lost attachment apparatus, realignment of anterior dentition, stabilization of occlusion, and minor periodontal plastic surgery. The anticipated loss of a maxillary lateral incisor was avoided. Restoration of a pleasant smile with nicely aligned teeth and esthetic gingival contours was achieved. The correct sequencing of the procedures involved was considered a key factor for the long-term esthetic outcome.

Ortho/Perio Treatment on Impacted Upper Central Incisors
Upper central incisor impaction has functional, esthetic and psychologic implications. Causes of the impaction can be divided in obstructive and traumatic. Among the first ones are: supernumerary teeth, odontomas and mesiodens. Among the second group are facial trauma received in the primary or early mixed dentition. In close relation as well with root dilaceration. Other less common reasons for impaction include: crowding, endocrine alterations, bone diseases, genetic conditions, extraction or ankylosis of primary incisors. The impacted upper central incisor can be classified depending on: mesio-distal position, occluso-gingival position, midline angulation, degree of root formation. If early intervention is not enough. There is the need for surgical exposure and orthodontic traction. Among possible treatment complications are: esthetic gingival sequelae, ankylosis and root resorption

Orthodontic Management of Impacted Teeth
Over the last 25 years we have managed different clinical situations that include every tooth in the mouth that can be impacted on an orthodontic patient. We will focus the webinar both on mucogingival considerations as well as orthodontic biomechanics. Impacted teeth can be a challenge and can make a treatment last longer. We will show a logic approach to these situations. That produces good stability, periodontal health and relative short treatment time.

Open Gingival Embrasures After Orthodontic Treatment in Adults
The purposes of this study were to determine the prevalence of posttreatment open gingival embrasures in adult orthodontic patients and to examine the association of pretreatment maxillary incisor malalignment, posttreatment alveolar bone height, interproximal contact position, root angulation, crown shape, and embrasure area with open gingival embrasures. Posttreatment intraoral photographs of 337 adult orthodontic patients were evaluated to determine the prevalence of open gingival embrasures.…

Maximizing Anterior Esthetics
As the new millennium gradua lly unfolds. the impact on dentistry will be substantial. In the past, the paradigm that controlled dental education and clinical dentistry was devoted to repairing the aftermath of the two major dental diseases (dental caries and periodontitis). However, in most regions of the United States, dental caries in younger individuals has decreased substantially for the past 25 years, due to fluoridation and the use of occlusal sealants. Furthermore, the number of patients with…
