This course addresses this gap in knowledge by summarizing some of the groundbreaking research performed to date on this topic and provides case examples of these biomaterials at work. The course begins with a review of the biologic background and applications of bone grafting materials utilized in dentistry. Thereafter, new and exciting updates on Platelet Rich Fibrin, Emdogain/Osteogain, Tetranite and Vitamin D deficiency are discussed with respect to their ability to promote either bone or periodontal regeneration.

@Daniel. Thank you for the kind words. Regarding alloplasts + b-TCP, we have done TONS of research on this topic as has the entire group in Bern. In general the synthetic bone grafts are not as effective as bone allografts as a replacement material - though there is much ongoign research in that field to try to develop something. Slowly that field is progressing but I would say still behind the commonly utilized allografts. The work on the new synthetically fabricated osteoinductive bone graft (Osopia) is not FDA approved yet. I would be cautious using Piezo to debride sockets because of the effects on bone cell viability. Surely it will still work, but there are more favorable alternatives that might not be as damaging to cells.

@Snjezana, actually I show the same grafting material table in my Biomaterials course and talk about the dentin grinder in our course on Biomaterials. These are the 'standard' tables but I agree dentin grafting should be included!

I use the piezo to debride sockets before grafting, is that killing good cells? I am a PRF doc, would that exudate return any damage I am doing?

The treatment concept in patients with edentulous maxilla will be discussed: Phase A: Augmentation procedures and implant placement (part I). Phase B: Le Fort I maxillary osteotomy for the correction of acquired class III (part II of the lecture). Clinical cases of moderate to severe edentulous maxillary atrophy are described: A combination of sub-nasal procedure, sinus elevation procedure and intra-oral autogenous bone blocks were used for ridge augmentation simultaneously with dental implant placement combined with scaffold mixed with platelets-rich-plasma (PRP) or bone-marrow aspirate (BMA) and covered with platelets-poor-plasma (PPP) as a biological membrane.

Titanium Mesh and rhBMP-2 in Ridge Augmentation: Options and Limitations
Titanium mesh has been used in reconstructive surgery and ridge augmentation for several years. The traditional technique involves using cancellous autogenous bone under the mesh scaffold. More recently growth factors and bone substitutes have been utilized as autograft replacements. There are several advantages to using titanium mesh for space maintenance including strength, ease of use, low cost and biocompatibility. However, the difficulty in removing the mesh has led to a search for other space maintenance scaffolds including tenting screws, dense preshaped collagen and porous high-density polyethylene. This webinar will discuss the use of rhBMP-2 for managing horizontal and vertical bone deficiencies with various scaffolds.

Advanced Bone Grafting Techniques: Part 1 - Autogenous Bone Blocks in the Reconstruction of the Atrophic Mandibular Ridge
This lecture will describe the use of autologous onlay block bone grafting for reconstruction of moderate to severe atrophic posterior mandibular alveolar ridge. This will include a discussion of the various options to this form of grafting, such as Short implants, Lingual positioning, nerve re-positioning, distraction osteogenesis, and GBR. The Mutli-Tier onlay Bone Graft Technique will be highlighted in this presentation. Additionally, a review of a recently submitted research paper of long term follow up of implants placed into autologous bone blocks harvested from the mandibular ramus, retromolar and sympheseal areas will be discussed. A description of surgical donor harvest sites in the mandible will also be performed as well as post op healing of these sites. Additional time will be spent reviewing causes of failure with bone blocks and implants placed into these sites.

This report demonstrates the remarkable efficacy of guided bone regeneration using a combination of titanium mesh, resorbable collagen membrane, and rhPDGF for vertical ridge augmentation, thus expanding the indications for implant therapy and allowing recovery of the three-dimensional esthetic architecture in a severely absorbed alveolar ridge.
